I love Vox. It has some really neat features. Unfortunately, it's not the perfect matchup for what I'm trying to do with this blog. Vox seems to be a more geared towards personal blogs, and I'm looking for something more professional oriented. For example, I'd love to upload my music collection over the next year or so, so I can have it available anywhere. But that kind of thing doesn't really belong on this blog.
With that in mind, now that I've started posting on a schedule I think this is a good time to look around for a new provider. I won't abandon my Vox, I just want to re-purpose it, and to do that I need somewhere else to put the professional journal. Here are some features that I'm looking for:
- Allow moderated anonymous comments (one of the biggest things Vox is missing)
- Allow me to automatically release a post on a schedule (a nice to have, but not required)
- Include a search box for just my blog. The search box on Vox is only good for all of Vox (another big one)
- Do syntax highlighting for source code (not required: just nice to have, but a huge plus if I can find it)
- Allow me to use my own domain name (not required- I don't have a domain yet and I could always forward it if I did)
These are features I like that are already included in Vox, but that many other services don't have yet. These are the reasons I'm still here. If another site matches these features, plus some I've listed above, I've got a good reason to move on.
- Extremely easy to include other media, even audio and video, without relying on YouTube.
- Access to groups (posting to groups being one way to start building up a readership).
- Pre-built themes. I'm not an artist, so Vox gives me something that looks nice and is more unique than, say, Blogger (with that said, my current theme here needs updated).
In an effort to make this blog a bit more interesting to anyone who doesn't already know me I mark posts about mundane, day to day happenings for viewing by friends and family only.
I know I have a few friends from high school and college who have found this blog, but none of you have Vox accounts. Unfortunately, if you do know me and would like to see these posts or comment (or even view anyone else's comment) on any post the only way to do so at present is to get a Vox account. This is an unfortunate limitation, but I don't yet have a satisfactory solution. I'm considering moving to Blogger or keeping two separate blogs, but neither solution is very good so for the moment things will remain as they are.
